  • So, with the dust finally settled on +-, how do people feel about the album these days?

Personally, I rank it as Mew’s worst, I have really tried to enjoy it but it just doesn’t inspire me.

    • Yes. Sometimes I feel that Mew have become too self-conscious of what they create, maybe? That they are constantly aware of their past, and try to push elements of it away. In 10 years we have had 2 albums, which is insane. A lot of time has been spent writing these songs, recording them, producing them. And for me (I can only speak for myself)…[Read more]

I agree – it’s a dissapointing album. With Bo out of the band, I find it hard to see them getting back to their ‘old’ level.

    • It’s not very cohesive and there are too many fadeouts, but I think it’s Mew’s best pop album. I like all the songs, but it lacks the full-length vision Mew normally apply to their albums.

I think songs like ‘Witness’, ‘Making Friends’, ‘Water Slides’, and ‘Interview The Girls’ are very mediocre compared to what Mew have done in the past. The album just feels less inspired.

        • With Witness and ITG I think they just shifted their ambitions towards making songs that were more straightforward structurally, and more melody-focussed. I think they’re successful efforts. Making Friends and Water Slides have their own quirks and unusual Mew-like qualities although they are maybe less bombastic or hard-hitting than some of Mew’s…[Read more]

    • I agree, sadly. Witness is really fun and Rows is beautiful, but that’s pretty much all I enjoy from +-. It kind of concerns me that this was the best they could come up with after 6 years of working on it.

    • I still listen to the album religiously. I love it much more now than I did when I first heard it. Witness and Waterslides seemed outright awful to me at first but I’ve grown to love them. Witness has an absolutely beautiful melody and is great both in the studio and stripped down. It undoubtedly sets the mood at the opening of their shows too.…[Read more]

  • There is an interview with Bo about the break in the new Soundvenue magazine. Only the printed version though. I have not read it myself. Anyone who has who could scan it and upload?

    • And, does Jordbo contain any relevant insights? Assuming someone here has a copy.

    • Yes, someone, please, tell us.

    • I pre-ordered the book, but it hasn’t arrived yet. Hopefully it will today.
I will also try to get hold of a Soundvenue Magazine and the latest Danish Euroman magazine, which also includes something with Bo.

      Then I’ll report back 😉

    • I just discovered this version of Quiet Sessions (7 tracks) plus two remixes of Witness, & Daddy Drone are featured on the US iTunes “Deluxe Edition” of +-.

*edit* I was snooping around other iTunes locations, and it seems the Denmark store includes a digital booklet with the album. Anyone know what it includes?

  • I haven’t been able to stop listening to this album since I saw them last week in SF. It’s like I’ve forgotten how to hit “play” on anything else.

I’m just curious – in the Reddit Ask me anything-thingy they talked about the Quiet Sessions. The question was on the matter of a b-side album…

crayfl: Are you guys planning on ever releasing a b-sides/rarity collection? Also related, are you planning on releasing any plus minus b-sides soon?

Mew: That’s a cool idea. Maybe one day. We h…[Read more]

Factoid: Rows is pronounced like “rows of things” because it was originally an instrumental composition which they described as “rows of ideas”. The end section (“draw for me a rainbow”) was written separately and they glued it together. 1/8 notes in the first bit become triplets in the end section.

    • Songs they’d originally worked on before Johan returned included Satellites and Making Friends as well as Western Silver Lion Cub. So the last bit of My Complications came first. They sketched out the rest of My Complications before Russell Lissack helped them finish it.

    • +- is Mew’s most expensive album ever.

    • All the selfies taken for The Night Believer will be used. So if you sent them a picture of something you shouldn’t have, you might have made The Night Believer video X rated.

    • Clinging To A Bad dream started as an extended jam by Silas and Bo (that initial African-inspired bit). Jonas added chords for the chorus. Incidentally Clinging’s guitar part has nothing to do with Boy. Speaking of which, Boy ended up on the scrap pile.

    • Cross The River started out with a part written by Bo and Nick Watts. Hence Nick Watts got his first ever songwriting credit for Mew.

    • There was going to be an extra bit to their live shows. Something, as far as I remember, to do with “reflective screens”, but they couldn’t get it to work. They said they might add more new songs to the set lists as the tour progresses. Backdrops may return, although not for the +- tour (I don’t think).

      • The lighting/stage design as it is seems pretty underwhelming compared to the way they were describing how it was going to be. That’s a shame they couldn’t get the fancy things to work properly. But I *really* want those backdrops to return. Really, really, really.

        • I miss the backdrops too. It feels like a worn out novelty seeing them without them.

    • Agnes, help me out…

They will answer the questions from MewX on video and had already filmed Silas answering one.

      • I think they’ve filmed them all? They got around 7 I think. The Silas one is a question to him, which must be mine because I don’t think any of the others are addressed to him, although I might be wrong.

        • Agnes replied

Hmm, maybe. Yes yours is the only one directly to Silas.

          • A good thing he didn’t know me as that weirdo who tried to ask him questions and then awkwardly hugged him.

    • Jonas talked for ages, and never seemed to tire of people asking him questions. I forgot to ask about Twin Peaks but there may be more things I’ve not mentioned.

      • Do you know when the MewX Q&A will come out? 🙂

        • No. They’ve done all the videos as mentioned above, and I think they might have sent them back, although they have to go through a bit of a chain to get back here.

    • Yeah in British English “rows” can mean arguments which might have made more sense in conjunction with the lyrics. If so it’s pronounced like “cows”.

    • Oh yeah with regards to Rows: they have played it in rehearsals, but they haven’t been able to figure out a good way of playing the last bit (“draw for me a rainbow”) because of the many vocal parts. They’ve tried to imitate them with synths, but it’s not sounded right yet.

Factoid: The beatboxing on Making Friends was recorded by Jonas on his iPhone. Apparently. Allegedly.

It was. I wouldn’t have been able to keep the conversation going and asking questions on my own..

            • I discovered that I am I an embarrassing fanboy, who knows them too well. At one point I knew something Jonas didn’t, and I seemed to know the chord progressions for +- better than him. I feel like I should go on Mastermind with Mew as my specialist subject. Also, next time I meet them I’m going to play it cool, promise.

Don’t worry we all know way too much about these guys.. I think the key is to pretend to know less than you do (or just being sufficiently drunk).

Plus I would totally watch that programme.

            • I forgot to pretend at all. Incredibly embarrassing, but a fun experience. I’m not sure if the BBC would allow Mew as a specialist subject because no one would understand, but maybe I should apply.

It was really fun. I don’t think you did anything embarrassing. And Jonas must have enjoyed himself otherwise he would just have left after the initial round of questions and pictures.

            • Yeah he seemed to be enjoying it all. He’s built up some confidence and sociability over the years.
