Hej danskere,
Just realised I don’t really know maths terminology in Danish. How do you say the following:
(4*3)/6=2
In English you’d probably say “open bracket four times (or multiplied by) three close bracket divided by six equals two” or just “brackets four times three divided by six equals two”.
-
I would probably say “parentes start, fire gange tre, parentes slut, divideret med seks lige med to”!
-
How do you say “squared” (like 3 squared is nine), “square root” (the square root of 9 is three), and “to the power of” (eg 2 to the power of 4 is 16)?
-
-
What if the power isn’t 2? Would say, “3 i syvende” mean “3 to the power of 7″? And how do you say “to the power of x”?
-
Yes you would say “3 i syvende” or alternatively “3 opløftet i syv”. Though the second example is more often used for longer powers or x. So “to the power of x” would be “opløftet i x”.
-
Tak danske frengers. Så er lektionen slut, for nu i hvert fald!

I’m really interested in learning Danish. I’ve been using Duolingo as well as listening to DR P6 BEAT a lot (to get used to voices and hear cool music.) I’m also taking a beginning Danish course here in Seattle. It is tons of fun so far. Eventually it would be great to get more practice with pronunciation (which is very hard!) Anyone have any…[Read more]

It’s available as a website and a mobile app, both of which talk to the same database. Danish is still in beta so it is not yet available in all learning languages (for example there is no French > Danish yet, but English > Danish is available.) It is a lot of fun and makes learning into a game.
-
The Danes say pretend you’re talking with potatoes in your mouth. I say struggle for a long time, and still not be able to affect a native accent well enough to not automatically be answered in English by strangers in Denmark.
-
Well either that or they ask “are you Swedish?” Gosh!
-
-
But, any questions, fire away!
-
Duolingo is awesome (learning French for fun these days!).
The best way learn a language is really to use it, though that might be hard with Danish in Seattle. So I would suggest on top of everything you’re doing watch some Danish movies and tv series with English subtitles. That way you can see the translation, hear the words and see people’s…[Read more]-
Any suggestions for good TV series and movies? I’ve already seen (and loved) Forbrydelsen, so maybe something similar?
-
People in the UK rave about Borgen (a political drama), in much the same way they did about The Killing (Forbrydelsen), which was a bit of a hit over here (and won the foreign drama series BAFTA, and was named programme of the year by Radio Times).
-
Sarah Lund herself appeared later in the episode, but it doesn’t seem to be on youtube.
Also this cracks me up (as does a lot of what Adam Buxton does):
-
That’s hysterical!
-
Haha, that last video. It took some concentration trying to make the subtitles “match” while actually understanding what they are saying.
-
-
I would also suggest Borgen. It is quite good. Other than that if you are into crime solving maybe Rejseholdet, which is about a mobile task force solving crimes around Denmark. It ran from 2000-2004 so it is quite old but it features a young Mads Mikkelsen.
Then there is Broen (The Bridge) which is a danish/swedish collaboration so half of it is…[Read more]-
And I just realised that Mads Mikkelsen is in all but one of the movies I mentioned. Oh well, he is the biggest star we got.
-
He’s great, but it is amusing how he does seem to be in literally every Danish film.
-
-
Thank you so much for your suggestions. I will be sure to check them out. And Mads Mikkelsen is great. I didn’t know who he was before Hannibal so I have a lot of catching up to do!

Jagten is an incredible film. I saw half of The Royal Affair on telly the other night, and it seemed really good; I need to watch it properly. And Pusher made a name of Nicolas Winding Refn (director of the video for Tsin-Tsi), who has since moved to Hollywood (with Drive being his biggest success), but I didn’t like it that much tbh.
I’ve only…[Read more]

Oh yeah I saw Blinkende Lygter too. Like Pusher, I watched it when I was having to write film reviews in Danish for a class, so maybe that affected my enjoyment of it. Thanks for the other recommendations, though, Agnes, I’ll try to check them out.
And I saw a film called Ækte Vare (international title: Flow) at the London Film Festival last…[Read more]

Well there is nothing like a class to ruin a good movie. But Blinkende Lygter does have weird kind of humor which you have to be into. De Grønne Slagtere and Adams Æbler are by the same director and have sort of the same dark humor thing going on.
-
-
Oh, another great movie is Den Eneste Ene (1999) which doesn’t seem to have an official English title but it means The One and Only. It is a romantic comedy about a handyman who install this woman’s kitchen and they fall in love. It is directed by Susanne Bier who have also directed Hævnen and it is a true classic in Denmark.
