It Stands Up Repeating — September 28, 2009 — 23:20

Last week we saw the video premiere of Repeaterbeater and the reception has been marvellous. Some have called it the best music video of the year (so far) and certainly one of the best Mew have ever had. Its predecessor Introducing Palace Players was not quite as appreciated due to the lack of band members in it. You can’t really see their faces in 156 either, can you? The next one up – as we know – is Beach and it’s on its way, I swear. In fact, it will be online in one month from now, either late October or very early November – to celebrate the upcoming European tour. It will be a very peculiar video with children chanting on a beach and characters in weird costumes.

All three music videos planned for No More Stories were shot in a short period of time in Copenhagen region last summer. Although being the second video out, Repeaterbeater was the last one to be shot. According to this short making of-documentary by Soundvenue magazine, Jonas Bjerre, Bo Madsen and Silas Graae were actually being hypnotized to some point, even with the distraction of cameras and crew members that include directors (of the Bacon-team) Martin de Thurah, Adam Hashemi and Lasse Martinussen. While watching the video, you get the feeling that even the directors are not entirely sure what’s gonna happen in the end and that the surprise-factor is the fresh take on it. They did have a screenplay for it, of course.

The video was shot in a lavish Danish mansion that didn’t need a lot of added set decoration, I assume. To make the narrative even more realistic, they speak their native tongue in it (subtitled in English). The style is very short film-like and most of it was beautifully shot in hand-held. Artistically it could be something that their national hero Lars von Trier would prefer. To give it more of a documentary feel, they allow a glimpse of Jonas on camera, for example. Personally, I have always preferred music videos that tell a story and have some actual film elements in them. Ever since the glory days of the late Michael Jackson (the 14-minute Thriller), these have always been the most memorable ones, whether the story follows the song lyrics or not. You don’t need to show band members playing their instruments at all and in this case Mew are playing them in their minds. Mew also get to show their acting talent and Bo takes the lead role once the music starts. As the song is so short, the video’s intro doubles the length and an intro will be seen in the next video as well (Beach also being a short track). If there’s anything negative to say about the Repeaterbeater video, is that it’s a bit too short even and kind of ends without a proper conclusion. Music videos for lesser-known bands are made to be shown in the internet nowadays, so length doesn’t really matter (as they are rarely played on television anymore). It would be great to see Mew making a full length feature someday.

‘Repeaterbeater’ – Music Video — September 23, 2009 — 19:05

The music video for Repeaterbeater is finally online. As was described earlier, this one really feels like a little film. Are you ready to get hypnotized? There’s also a cool competition at this Norwegian website.

Jonas Bjerre On Music Videos — September 21, 2009 — 18:34

We had a little computer failure recently and lost quite a bit of valuable stuff with it. Here’s only a short part of the interview we had with Jonas Bjerre (who just turned 33 today). The following read is quite dated for it was made in Copenhagen on June 24th (Mew themselves experienced some computer problems on that day, and they had to play their first show in two years without backdrops)…

*****

MewX: You’re not completely in charge with the visuals anymore, are you?

Jonas Bjerre: No. I thought, you know, when we finished the album we were all quite exhausted and we knew that we were going to tour soon and at the same time I’ve been talking a lot to Martin de Thurah about doing music videos and we wanted to do something where everything would fit together, because in the past, my visuals, they were quite different from the music videos, so we kind of… I still do a little bit.

MX: What can we expect from your show tonight?

JB: Well, I’m not entirely sure, because I think that, you know… I don’t know if they’ll fix the problem for tonight, so we may have to play without them (backdrops). I’m hoping they’ll fix it. There’s been some problems with the computers.

MX: So what did Martin do?

JB: We’ve done three music videos with him. They’re quite interesting, very different, you know. I haven’t seen anything finished yet, but they’re very sort of… they’re not like music videos, more like little films and there’s real sound in some of them, I think. We had these weird experiences making them, you know, we went to this castle and there was this hypnotist who put us in a trance and all these weird things. And the other one is… one where we’re not even in it. Like nature versus something very geometrical.

MX: And they are going to be aired on television?

JB: Yeah, I guess so… and maybe the internet. The internet is very important now for music videos because MTV don’t really play music videos anymore, they just play reality-tv. So actually, YouTube is probably the biggest media for music videos now.

MX: There were two names – which I can’t remember now – were also attached to these videos?

JB: Yes. Adam Hashemi and Lasse Martinussen, they are also directing. They each had like an idea they really burned for, so they’re all directing together everything, but I think the one with nature is mostly Martin’s passion and the one with the hypnosis is more Adam’s thing, so they’re kind of all working together.

MX: Is Introducing Palace Players going to be the first music video?

JB: I think so. I think that one is almost finished. Repeaterbeater is definitely going to be a video, and Beach, so those three. That’s gonna happen.

The videos for Repeaterbeater and Beach are to be released online very soon. It’s about time.
